Description

The melting graft syndrome describes the deterioration of a skin graft in a burn patient.

Synonyms: ghosting graft syndrome, burn wound impetigo

Clinical features:

(1) previously well-taken skin graft or healed burn

(2) progressive, patchy epithelial loss at the site, giving a moth-eaten appearance

Pathogenesis: Staphylococcus aureus, often MRSA

The outcome is worse if diagnosis and/or therapy is delayed.

Management often involves antibiotic therapy, topical steroids and wound care.
