Description

Chen et al substituted estimates for eGFR for serum creatinine for the calculation of the MELD score. The authors are from Mackay Memorial Hospital, in Taipei, Taiwan.

eGFR equations in mL per min per 1.73 square meter:

(1) abbreviated MDRD model (MDRD-4)

(2) MDRD model with 6 components (MDRD-6)

(3) CKD-EPI

Other parameters:

(4) serum total bilirubin in mg/dL, with minimum value 1

(5) INR, with minimum value 1

MELD using MDRD-4 =

= (8.82 * LN(INR)) + (4.07 * LN(serum total bilirubin)) - (5.13 * LN(eGFR)) + 30.57

MELD using MDRD-6 =

= (8.78 * LN(INR)) + (3.93 * LN(serum total bilirubin)) - (5.14 * LN(eGFR)) + 30.05

MELD using CKD-EPI=

= (8.80 * LN(INR)) + (4.01 * LN(serum total bilirubin)) - (5.37 * LN(eGFR)) + 31.93

Performance:

The area under the ROC curve for the MDRD-6 equation is 0.91. This was slightly greater than the MELD score using serum creatinine.
