Description

Rout et al reported the MELD-E score for patients with cirrhosis and bleeding esophageal varices. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Patient selection: cirrhosis with bleeding esophageal varices

Outcome: 6-weeks mortality

Parameters:

(1) MELD score

(2) encephalopathy (0 if absent, 1 if present)

MELD-E score =

= (0.1 * (MELD)) + (1.539 * (points for encephalopathy)) - 3.472

Interpretation:

minimum score: -3.472

maximum score: dependent on MELD score, > 0.5

The higher the score the greater the mortality rate.

A score > -1.5 is associated with high risk.
