Meigs originally described a group of findings seen in women with ovarian fibromas. The occurrence of similar findings with other ovarian tumors is referred to as pseudo-Meigs syndrome.
Classic Meigs syndrome:
(1) ovarian fibroma
(2) ascites
(3) pleural effusion
One variation is the presence of pericardial effusion as well.
Tumors associated with pseudo-Meigs syndrome include:
(1) struma ovarii (mature teratoma)
(2) Sertoli cell tumor
(3) leiomyoma
(4) granulosa cell tumor
(5) carcinoid tumor
