Description

Tsunami waves typically may range from ones that are barely detectable to ones around 30 meters (about 100 feet) tall. However, under certain rare circumstances truly massive waves can be generated

The largest tsunami in recorded times occurred after a landslide in Lituya Bay in Alaska with the wave reaching 524 meters (1,719 feet). There is evidence that larger ones occurred in prehistoric times.

Potential causes of a megatsunami:

(1) massive landslide

(2) eruption of a supervolcano

(3) asteroid impact

(4) nuclear bomb

(5) collapse of a massive ice sheet
