Megarectum may exist alone or it may be associated with megacolon.
Gladman et al defined megarectum as a rectal diameter > 6.3 cm at minimum distending pressure.
Causes may include:
(1) chronic constipation or stool retention
(2) short segment Hirschsprung's disease
(3) anorectal malformation
(4) status post surgery
(5) Chaga's disease
(6) myotonic dystrophy
(7) spinal trauma
(8) senile (old age)
(9) idiopathic
