A signifcant enlargement of the prepuce (megaprepuce) may be congenital or acquired.
Many cases with excess prepuce are congenital. A patient typically has a penile shaft and glans that are normal sizes for age. There is extensive redundancy of inner preputial skin over the penile shaft.
Acquired megaprepuce can occur with:
(1) chronic inflammation
(2) chronic stretching by the patient
Difficulty with voiding is a primary indication for early surgical correction. If there is narrowing over the distal prepuce then the prepuce can enlarge like a balloon during urination.
There may also be cosmetic concerns.
