Medications taken for a health condition can result in impaired driving. Impairment can occur with prescription, over-the-counter and self medications.
Drugs that can impair driving:
(1) opiates for pain
(2) codeine for pain or cough
(3) anxiety medications
(4) anti-seizure drugs
(5) antipsychotic drugs
(6) antidepressants
(7) antihistamines (in cold or allergy products)
(8) sleeping pills
(9) muscle relaxants
(10) anti-diarrhea drugs
(11) anti-motion sickness medications
(12) diet pills
(13) stay awake drugs
(14) decongestants
(15) herbal product
(16) any drug that cautions against operating machinery.
Factors that impair driving:
(1) slowing of response times
(2) drowsiness
(3) blurred vision
(4) dizziness
(5) being distracted (unable to focus or pay attention)
(6) nausea
(7) excitability
(8) hangover
Differential diagnosis:
(1) drug-impaired driving with a drug of abuse
(2) alcohol-impaired driving
(3) illness-impaired driving
