Description

Physician members of a hospital's medical staff belong to one of several categories based on duration of practice, extent of service and role played in the operation of the hospital. The precise names and definitions may vary between institutions, but the following categories are generally included.


 

Active or attending status:

(1) physicians who have a significant proportion of their practice at the hospital

(2) have admitting privileges unless in a hospital-based practice such as radiology, pathology or anesthesiology

(3) may have requirements for committee membership or team participation

(4) have full privileges, including the right to vote

 

Courtesy status:

(1) physicians who admit or practice at the hospital but have the majority of their practice at another facility

(2) do not have the right to vote

(3) do not have requirements to participate in committees or teams

 

Consulting status:

(1) physicians in a specialty who consult but do not admit

(2) do not have the right to vote

(3) do not have requirements to participate in committees or teams

 

Provisional status:

(1) physicians who have recently joined the medical staff and in a probationary period

(2) cannot vote and do not have full privileges

 

Temporary status

(1) privileges assigned for a designated period of time, usually one or more weeks

(2) includes locum tenens

(3) cannot vote

(4) typically do not participate in committees or teams

 

Honorary or emeritus status:

(1) senior members of the active staff

(2) may be defined by a given number of years with active staff membership

(3) may or may not be retired
