The ratio of the mean platelet volume (MPV) to platelet count (PC) may have prognostic significance in several conditions.
Basis: in platelet consumption the platelet count may fall. Newly released platelets tend to have a larger volume compared to more mature platelets. When both are dominant the ratio increases.
Parameters:
(1) mean platelet volume in femtoliters
(2) platelet count in 10^9 per liter (some use 10^4 per microliter)
ratio =
= (MPV) / (PC)
Interpretation:
• Variation in the ratio and cut-offs may be due to variation in the platelet count units.
• Yardan et al used a ratio > 0.0339 as significant, using platelet count 10^9/L
• An increased ratio is associated with greater inflammation.
• In thrombocythemia the ratio may be low since the platelets are small the platelet count is elevated.
