Description

Chaiteerakij et al reported a staging system for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. This is intended to provide an accurate way of predicting survival. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic, Chulalongkorn University, and the Thai Red Cross Society.


Patient selection: perihilar cholangiocarcinoma

 

Criteria for Stage IV - one or both of the following:

(1) peritoneal metastases

(2) ECOG performance status 3 or 4

 

Criteria for Stage III - one or more of the following:

(1) serum CA 19-9 >= 1,000 U/mL

(2) lymph node metastases

(3) multiple tumors

(4) tumor size > 3 cm

 

Criteria for Stage II - one or both of the following:

(1) ECOG status 1 or 2

(2) vascular encasement

 

Criteria for Stage I - none of the above and all of the following:

(1) ECOG 0

(2) tumor size <= 3 cm

(3) single tumor

(4) no metastases or vascular encasement

(5) serum CA 19-9 < 1,000 U/mL
