Description

The clinical activity of ulcerative colitis can be evaluated with a score developed at the Mayo Clinic. This can be used for the initial evaluation and to monitor the patient's response to therapeutic interventions.

Parameters:

(1) stool frequency

(2) rectal bleeding

(3) endoscopic findings

(4) physician's global assessment

Parameter

Points

stool frequency

not increased (normal for patient)

1 to 2 stools per day more than normal

3 to 4 stools per day more than normal

2

>= 5 stools per day more than normal

3

where:

• Mild endoscopic disease includes erythema, mild friability and/or decreased vascular pattern.

• Moderate endoscopic disease includes marked erythema, lack of vascular pattern, definite friability and mucosal erosions.

• Severe endoscopic disease includes spontaneous bleeding and mucosal ulcerations.

total score =

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 12

• The higher the score the more severe the disease.

A "partial" Mayo score consists of 3 of the parameters (stool frequency, rectal bleeding, global assessment) without endoscopy.
