Description

Ravi et al evaluated the criteria for the diagnosis of plasma cell leukemia (PCL). This included patients with clinical multiple myeloma with increased plasma cells in the peripheral blood. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic Rochester, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale.


Patient selection: evidence of a plasma cell dyscrasia

 

Current criteria for the diagnosis of plasma cell leukemia - both of the following:

(1) >= 20% plasma cells in the differential count of peripheral blood

2) absolute plasma cell count >= 2,000 per microliter

 

Additional criteria - both of the following:

(1) the patient meets diagnostic criteria for multiple myeloma

(2) >= 5% plasma cells in the differential count of peripheral blood
