A mother who develops hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets (HELLP) or acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) during pregnancy may have a fetus with an inherited metabolic disorder.
Inherited Disorder in Fetus
carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I) deficiency
medium-chain acyl -CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency
long-chain-3-hydroxyacyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency
The fetus of a mother with AFLP or HELLP should be screened for an inherited metabolic disorder.
If the fetus is found to be homozygous for a genetic defect, then the mother will be a heterozygous carrier.
