Dukhovny et al reported the Maternal Antenatal Transport Score (MATS) for evaluation of a pregnant woman about to deliver a moderately premature infant. This can help to identify a mother who should be transferred to a high-risk obstetrical service prior to delivery, rather than transferring the neonate after delivery. The authors are from Harvard University, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program Oakland.
Patient selection: pregnant woman about to deliver a moderately premature infant (30 weeks 0 days to 34 weeks 6 days)
Outcome: neonate requires intubation, administration of surfactant and/or mechanical ventilation in the first 24 hours after delivery
Parameters:
(1) gestational age in weeks
(2) sex of fetus
(3) antenatal corticosteroids
(4) race

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 48
• A MATS score >= 25 had a sensitivity of 52% and specificity of 85% for identifying a neonate requiring intensive support.
• A MATS score >= 14 had a sensitivity of 79% and specificity of 56%.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.77.
