Description

The masochistic(self-defeating) personality disorder was recognized in DSM III, but subsequently was removed. It is currently considered a paraphilic behavior. The term is derived from the name of Chevalier Leopold von Sacher-Masoch who wrote on his experiences.


Key feature: taking pleasure from,or attraction to,being submissive, suffering pain or being humiliated

 

The person may form a relationship with a sadistic or narcissistic person.

 

Other features:

(1) self-derogation

(2) may be motivated by feelings of guilt

(3) self-defeating and sabotaging behaviors

(4) good fortune or pleasurable opportunitiesmay cause distress

(5) engaged in saving others, often with the need to self-sacrifice

 

Comorbid features may include:

(1) depression

(2) poor self-image

(3) a history of childhood abuse

 

Masochistic behavior may range from a mild sexual preference to severely pathological. It may be transient or persistent.

 

Some people reject the concept since it justifies abusive behavior ("the person was asking for it").
