Kato et al identified markers of relapse in a patient who has been treated for cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa. The authors are from Okayama University in Japan
Patient selection: cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa
Outcome: relapse (reoccurrence or new onset of cutaneous disease more than 6 months after initial treatment; requires either increase of daily prednisolone dose to > 20 mg or use of an additional immunosuppressive drug)
Key markers:
(1) history of cutaneous ulcer prior to treatment
(2) absolute neutrophil count > 4,900 per µL
Additional markers:
(3) elevated CRP
(4) increased neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio
(5) increased systemic immune-inflammation index (SIII)
