The margin index is a ratio that may give insights into the adequacy of the excision of ducal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast.
Parameters:
(1) tumor diameter in mm
(2) distance to nearest margin in mm
margin index =
= (distance to margin) / (tumor size) * 100
Interpretation:
• A margin index <= 5.6 is associated with a risk of residual tumor after a breast tumor resection.
Additional factors associated with residual tumor:
(1) comedonecrosis
(2) large tumor
