Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) is used in the evaluation of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.
Types of manual muscle testing:
(1) total (24 proximal, distal and axial muscles, bilateral)
(2) proximal (7 proximal muscles, bilateral)
(3) 6 muscles unilateral
(4) 8 muscles unilateral
Testing: performed unilaterally on the right side
Muscle groups shared by all scores:
(1) deltoid
(2) ankle dorsiflexor
(3) quadriceps
Other muscles (with group designation):
(1) trapezius: 13, 88
(2) iliopsoas: 13, 88, 133, 136, 142
(3) wrist flexor: 13. 55, 133
(4) wrist extensor: 58, 88, 136, 142
(5) biceps: 55, 58, 133, 136, 142
(6) gluteus maximum: 13, 55, 58, 88, 133, 136
(7) gluteus medius: 55. 58, 142
(8) neck flexor: 13, 55, 58
(9) neck extensor: 88, 133, 136, 142
Test group 136 has the most commonly tested muscles.
Test group 58 was selected by the consensus group, followed by group 13.
Each muscle group is score from 0 to 10 (Kendall et al).
total score =
= SUM(points for all 8 muscles)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 80 (normal)
