Description

Syphilis may affect the eye in a number of ways, which may vary during the various stages of the disease.

Ocular manifestation may include:

(1) interstitial keratitis

(2) uveitis (anterior, intermediate, posterior)

(3) chorioretinitis

(4) retinitis

(5) retinal vasculitis

(6) optic neuropathy

(7) cranial nerve neuropathies

Screening tests for syphilis are often negative. More definitive tests may be negative. So negative tests do not exclude the diagnosis.
