Description

Shimon et al evaluated men with osteoporosis secondary to hypogonadism. The authors are from Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Tel-Hashomer, Israel.


 

Patient selection: hypogonadal male with osteoporosis (T score < -2.0 at the lumbar spine or femoral neck)

 

Recommendations:

(1) Provide androgen replacement with testosterone.

(2) Treat with alendronate.

 

Additional interventions:

(1) Discontinue smoking if practiced.

(2) Do not drink alcohol to excess.

(3) Avoid or minimize therapy with corticosteroids and other drugs associated with osteoporosis.

(4) Provide adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium (600 IU vitamin D and 800 mg calcium per day in study).

 

Exception: Hypogonadism induced in the treatment of prostate cancer
