Description

A patient with chronic granulomatous may develop malnutrition during the course of the illness.

Factors contributing to malnutrition:

(1) malabsorption associated with gastrointestinal disease

(2) increased catabolism associated with chronic fever, repeated infections and/or hyperinflammatory state

(3) poor appetite

Types of malnutrition:

(1) protein malnutrition with serum hypoalbuminemia

(2) vitamin deficiencies

(3) deficiencies of iron and other metals

Nutritional replacement can be challenging, especially in patients with gastrointestinal involvement. Parenteral nutrition may be infectious complications of the infusion site. A carefully placed port treated meticulously may be successful.
