Description

The Malignant Syndrome in Parkinson's disease resembles the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.


Patient selection: Parkinson's disease

 

Clinical features:

(1) high fever

(2) marked rigidity

(3) altered level of consciousness

(4) autonomic dysfunction

(5) elevated serum CK concentration

 

Risk factors:

(1) discontinuation of levodopa or other anti-Parkinsonian drugs

(2) battery depletion in deep brain stimulation

(3) infection

(4) dehydration

(5) hot weather

 

Complications:

(1) severe pneumonia

(2) DIC

(3) acute renal failure
