Description

A male with an inguinal hernia may experience sexual dysfunction. Uncomplicated repair of the hernia may be followed by improved sexual function afterwards. Complications may result in sexual dysfunction.

An inguinal hernia can:

(1) cause pain or a bulge in the inguinal region

(2) have a negative effect on libido, erection and orgasm

After successful hernia repair there often is an improvement in sexual function.

Impaired sexual function after hernia repair can occur in patients with:

(1) problems in wound healing (seroma, hematoma, infection)

(2) neuralgias

(3) mesh complications

(4) testicular damage

In many patients any postoperative impairment was transient.

Some patients with complications may experience postoperative sexual dysfunction.
