Description

Hypothyroidism may be associated with infertility and erectile dysfunction in the male. Subclinical hypothyroidism may first be recognized during the workup for male infertility.


Clinical features:

(1) erectile dysfunction

(2) male infertility

 

Laboratory findings:

(1) elevated serum TSH concentration

(2) reduced serum concentration of thyroid hormones

(3) variable antithyroid antibodies

 

Findings on semen analysis may include:

(1) reduced sperm count

(2) reduced sperm motility

(3) abnormal sperm morphology with reduced percentage of normal spermatozoa

 

Correction of the hypothyroidism should result in improvements if it is the only abnormality present.
