Description

Male external genitals are exposed to bites from animals. Fortunately these injuries are rare.


 

Animals that may bite male genitals include:

(1) dog

(2) horse

(3) donkey

 

Almost any animal with teeth can damage the male genitalia under the right (or wrong) circumstances.

 

Injuries that may occur:

(1) focal loss of skin

(2) extensive loss of skin including degloving injury

(3) avulsion

(4) transection of urethra, corpus cavernosum, corpus spongiosum, spermatic cord or other structure

(5) partial or total amputation of the penis

(6) damage to or amputation of one or both testicles

 

Complications:

(1) poor cosmesis

(2) infection, including tetanus and rabies

(3) difficulties with sexual intercourse

(4) infertility

(5) scarring

(6) meatal stenosis

(7) urethrocutaneous fistula

(8) post-traumatic stress disorder

 

Management includes:

(1) antibiotic prophylaxis

(2) debridement of devitalized tissues and irrigation

(3) tetanus prophylaxis

(4) rabies prophylaxis if indicated

(5) primary closure of minor injuries

(6) reconstructive procedures

(7) repair of complications

(8) antibiotic therapy if infection develops

(9) psychological support for patient and family
