Description

Some patients with malaria develop a glomerulopathy.


Patient selection: acute malaria with renal dysfunction

 

Clinical features:

(1) acute renal failure

(2) variable nephrotic syndrome

 

Glomerular lesions include:

(1) collapsing glomerulopathy

(2) focal and segmental glomerulonephritis

(3) minimal change disease

 

A patient with malarial glomerulopathy may also develop:

(1) hemolytic uremic syndrome

(2) hemophagocytic syndrome

 

Differential diagnosis: glomerulopathy from another cause
