Description

Majocchi's granulomas are associated with a fungal folliculitis. Dermatophytes are a common cause but the condition can be caused by other fungi.

Features of a Majocchi granuloma:

(1) The patient has a dermatophyte infection.

(2) The patient may be immunocompromised but not always.

(3) The patient develops a nodule or plaque, often in an area subjected to trauma.

(4) A skin biopsy shows fungal elements in a ruptured hair follicle with fungal elements extending into the adjacent dermis.

(5) There is an intense inflammatory response that may range from lymphoplasmacytic to granulomatous.
