Description

Beckert et al developed the MAID score for evaluating chronic wounds of the lower extremity. This can help to identify a wound that is likely to heal. The authors are from the University of Tubingen in Germany.

Patient selection: chronic wound of the lower extremity receiving optimum wound care.

Parameters:

(1) multiple ulcerations (M)

(2) area in square cm (A)

(3) palpable pedal impulses (I)

(4) duration in days

where:

• A single wound with an area of 4 square cm has a diameter of 2.25 cm (about an inch).

• The authors use area as a parameter but mention centimeters instead of square centimeters. If 4 cm is supposed to be the diameter then the area is 50 square cm. Also if multiple wounds were present areas would be easier to add than diameters.

total score =

= SUM(points for all 4 paraemters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 4

• The higher the score the less likely that the wound will heal.

• An increase of 1 point decreases the chances of healing by 37%.

Limitations:

• The quality of care will impact healing.
