Description

Madariaga Virus (MADV) is an arbovirus primarily reported in Latin America.


Synonym: South American Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV)

 

It is an alphavirus in the Eastern Equine Encephalitis antigenic complex.

 

It is most often reported in equine populations in Latin America. The virus may also infect many other species of mammals.

 

Human cases may take the form of:

(1) severe neurological disease

(2) mild febrile illness without neurological signs

(3) asymptomatic (found by testing of populations during an outbreak)

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) Zikavirus

(2) Chikungunya virus

(3) dengue
