Description

A healthy person who is a frequent plateletpheresis donor may develop lymphopenia.

The lymphopenia includes depletion of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Flow cytometry is required to accurately determine the impact.

Risk factors:

(1) frequent plateletpheresis

(2) use of a leukoreduction system chamber in the plateletpheresis circuit

The diagnosis requires exclusion of other causes of lymphopenia. The donor's absolute lymphocyte count should have been normal prior to starting donations.

The lymphopenia may persist for years.

No known adverse effects for the donors have been reported, but the follow-up period has been relatively limited.
