Description

Lupus tumidus (lupus erythematosus tumidus) is a type of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus.


Risk factors:

(1) therapy with bortezomib

 

Clinical features of lupus tumidus:

(1) shiny, smooth, erythematous-violaceous urticarial plaque

(2) occurs in sun-exposed skin

(3) heals without scarring or hypopigmentation

(4) variable results for serum antinuclear antibodies (often negative or low-titer)

 

Histologic features:

(1) perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate in the dermis

(2) variable vacuolar degeneration of the basal membrane

(3) direct immunofluorescence at the epidermal-dermal junction is usually negative

 

The diagnosis requires exclusion of other diagnoses (reticular erythematous mucinosis, etc).
