Description

Lupin beans are grown around the world for livestock feed or to make flour. An adverse reaction may occur due to one of several possible mechanisms.

Types of reactions:

(1) acute anticholinergic reactions due to quinolizidine alkaloids

(2) motor neuron disease associated with chronic alkaloid toxicity

(3) hepatotoxicity (lupinosis) due to the mycotoxin phomopsin produced by species of the mold Phomopsis

(4) allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis

Risk factors for alkaloid toxicity:

(1) consumption of a variety with a high alkaloid content

(2) improper preparation

(3) large or multiple servings

(4) very young or very old
