Description

Toussie et al determined the prognosis for a patient in the Emergency Department with COVID-19 based on the presence of opacities in the lung fields. The authors are from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.


Patient: COVID-19 in the ED

 

Chest X-ray: The left and right lung fields are each divided into 3 zones (top, middle, bottom). Each is scored for the presence or absence of opacity.

Interpretation:

minimum score: 0

maximum score: 6

A score >= 3 is associated with intubation (odds ratio 6.2).

Risk factors for admission were a score >= 2 (odds ratio 6.2) and obesity (odds ratio 2.4).
