Description

Venuta et al listed general criteria for considering a patient with a lung disease on the waiting list for lung transplantation. These can help identify a patient who has a reasonable chance of benefiting from the transplant. The authors are from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in Rome.

Parameters:

(2) life expectancy

(3) concurrent renal or hepatic disease

(4) malignancy

(5) ability to participate in a rehabilitation program

(6) ability to understand and comply with a complex medical program

(7) psychological state

(8) previous pleural procedures

where:

• I am not sure what "acceptable" previous pleural procedure refers to. My guess is that the patient has had either no previous pleural procedures or has had procedures that will not interfere with the transplant surgery.

total number of desirable features =

= SUM(points for all 8 factors)

Interpretation:

• minimum number of desirable criteria present: 0

• maximum number of desirable criteria present: 8

• The ideal candidate for a lung transplant procedure should meet all 8 criteria.
