Description

The LUMBAR Syndrome is an acronym that refers to a constellation of abnormalities with cutaneous hemangioma of the lumbosacral region, perineum or lower extremity the most visible finding. Detection of the other anomalies often requires imaging studies.


 

Synonyms: PELVIS Syndrome, SACRAL Syndrome

L

lower body infantile hemangioma(s) and other cutaneous defects

U

urogenital anomalies, ulceration (skin)

M

myelopathy

B

body deformities (spinal dysraphism, limb underdevelopment)

A

anorectal malformations, arterial anomalies

R

renal anomalies

 

Other findings may include:

(1) tethered spinal cord

(2) intra-pelvic hemangiomas

 

Oral propranolol should not be used to treat the hemangioma until after the patient has been evaluated for arterial anomalies.

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) diaper rash
