Description

Love bombing is a method to manipulate the emotions of another in order to establish control.

Its use is associated with:

(1) narcissists

(2) abusers

(3) cults

Features:

(1) very intense expressions of affection or interest very early in a relationship that is overwhelming ("all on")

(2) the goal is to entangle the victim in the relationship

(3) once the victim is entangled then the perpetuator's attitude switches dramatically ("all off")

(4) the perpetuator engages in some form of emotional control or abuse and may demand constant attention

The first phase may take the form of lavish gifts or excessive praise. The level of attention is much greater than is normal for an evolving relationship. The perpetuator may become defensive or hostile if questioned or challenged.

The final phase may include attempts to isolate the victim from all other contact.

Differential:

(1) very affectionate or interested person, without intent to control or abuse
