Description

An acute infection with measles can result in a loss of immune memory (immune amnesia).

Measles virus receptor is highly expressed on memory T, B and plasma cells leading to their depletion. Following recovery there is some but incomplete recovery.

Following acute measles there is:

(1) a reduction in the number of epitopes recognized

(2) a reduction in the strength of the epitope response

The impact was greater for severe measles but even mild measles has an impact.

There is no decline in the absolute concentration of immunoglobulin classes in the serum, so the impact will not be detected by measuring quantitative immunoglobulins.
