A classification scheme for the endoscopic appearance of esophagitis emphasizing mucosal breaks was presented at a symposium at the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Los Angeles in 1994. The intent was to develop a system that could be reproducible between different observers.
Endoscopic Findings
Grade
no mucosal breaks
0
>= 1 mucosal breaks confined to the mucosal folds, maximum length <= 5 mm
A
>= 1 mucosal break(s) > 5 mm long, confined to mucosal folds, not continuous between the tops of 2 mucosal folds
B
>= 1 mucosal break(s) continuous between the tops of 2 or more mucosal folds, but not circumferential
C
circumferential mucosal break
D
after Table 1, page 88
