Description

Lookism (appearance discrimination) refers to bias related to a person's appearance.

Lookism correlates with attractiveness of the person - the more attractive the person the greater the attainment.

A person who is considered attractive may experience:

(1) greater occupational success

(2) greater approval

(3) greater sexual gratification

A person who is not attractive may experience less success and greater rejection. This can lead to depression and poor self-image. These in turn can lead to risky behaviors and substance abuse.

Appearance discrimination may be mixed with other forms of discrimination (age, race, sex, obesity, etc).
