Description

A confidence trick is a dishonest practice that is relies on the criminal gaining  the confidence of the victim or victims. The long con is a confidence trick that is conducted over a relatively long period of time. Bernie Madoff executed a modern long con.


Features:

(1) one or more criminals target one or more victims

(2) the criminals try to win the confidence of the victims

(3) the criminals avoid short-term gains, and may even give benefits to the victims to incite their greed

(4) the con extends over a period of time ranging from several days to years

(5) confederates of the criminal may be used to make the deal seem more legitimate and to lull the victim into a sense of security

(6) once the criminal feels that the maximum benefit is available, then the criminal disappears with the valuables
