Description

Steward et al reported a number of indices related to Crohn's disease and its appearance on magnetic resonance enterography. One index is for evidence of acute inflammation in an endoscopic biopsy from the terminal ileum. The authors are from University College London.

Selection: endoscopic biopsy from the terminal ileum

Outcome: evidence of acute inflammation

Parameters:

(1) erosion or ulceration

(2) polymorphonuclear leukocytes in lamina propria

(3) cryptitis

(4) crypt abscess formation

(5) inflammatory exudates

(6) granulomas

Finding

Points

absent

0

present

1

The degree of a finding is not included in the score.

score =

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)

Interpreation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 6

• The higher the score the greater the number of markers for acute inflammation.
