Description

Lomotil is an anti-diarrheal product containing diphenoxylate and atropine. It is available as an over-the-counter combination product in many countries. Diphenoxylate is an opioid drug thought to be of low abuse potential, but abuse and dependence can occur.

Diphenoxylate is an opioid of the phenylpiperidine subfamily. It is is classified as a schedule V controlled substance when mixed with atropine but schedule II if used alone.


A person misusing Lomotil takes it when there are no indications for its use.

 

A person may misuse Lomotil:

(1) to reduce withdrawal from other opiates

(2) if the atropine side effects can be tolerated

(3) if alternative opiates are not available

(4) if it is readily available

 

Unpleasant effects of the atropine:

(1) dry mouth

(2) blurred vision

(3) tachycardia

(4) nausea
