In Japan the locomotive syndrome refers to any decline in locomotive ability in an elderly adult. This can help to identify a patient who is highly likely to require nursing care. It may be an early manifestation of frailty.
Patient selection: adult >= 65 years of age
Features:
(1) a musculoskeletal disorder (arthritis, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, low back pain, etc)
(2) impaired mobility
Screening questions for locomotive syndrome (Loco-Check):
(1) unable to stand on one leg to put on a sock
(2) stumble or slip at home
(3) need use the handrail when climbing stairs
(4) cannot cross a road before a traffic light changes (slow gait)
(5) difficulty walking continuously for 15 minutes
(6) difficulty walking with a shopping bag weighing 2 kilograms
(7) difficulty doing housework requiring physical strength
A patient with the locomotive syndrome is at risk for falls and fractures.
