Description

Clonorchis sinensis may be transferred in a liver transplant.

Typically the donor lives in or has a history of living in southeast Asia. The donor usually becomes infected by eating raw or undercooked fish.

The donor may be symptomatic but a low-intensity infection may be asymptomatic or have nonspecific symptoms.

In many cases the trematode is killed during the cold preservation procedure.

Presentation after the transplant:

(1) postoperative blockage of the hepatico-jejunostomy splintage tube

(2) obstructive jaundice

(3) recurrent pyogenic cholangitis

(4) unexplained upper abdominal discomfort, diarrhea and malaise
