Description

Budnitz et al reported drugs associated with emergency hospital admissions in older Americans because of adverse drug reactions. These drugs are commonly prescribed so impact a large number of patients. The authors re from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University.


Patients: Americans >= 65 years of age

 

Drugs affecting coagulation:

(1) warfarin

(2) oral antiplatelet agents

 

Drugs affecting blood glucose:

(1) insulin

(2) oral hypoglycemia agents

 

Others:

(1) digoxin

(2) opioid analgesics

 

High-risk drugs for use in the elderly or those considered inappropriate for use represented only about 1% of hospitalizations.
