The ratio of lipase to amylase elevations may correlate with the cause of acute pancreatitis.


lipase-to-amylase ratio =

= ((serum lipase) / (upper normal limit of lipase)) / ((serum amylase) / (upper normal limit of amylase))

 

Interpretation:

• Ratios greater than 3 suggest alcoholic pancreatitis.
