Description

A patient with symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) may benefit from some simple lifestyle modifications.

Lifestyle modifications that can help to reduce symptoms of OAB:

(1) Optimize fluid intake.

(2) Stop smoking (if a smoker).

(3) Lose weight if obese.

(4) Regulate bowel function, avoiding constipation and straining to pass stool.

(5) Reduce or avoid alcohol, caffeine and/or carbonated beverages.

(6) Avoid bladder irritants in diet.

Adjusting fluid intake may take some trial and error. Reducing excessive fluid intake is often helpful. Some patients may benefit from increasing intake. This may need to be monitored if the patient has a significant comorbid conditions like heart or renal failure.
