Lethocerus americanus is an insect encountered in bodies of fresh water.

Habitat: ponds or fresh water streams
It can bite the toes of swimmers, less often fingers. The bite may be painful due to the presence of a toxin. Occasional patients may experience hypoesthesia in the extremity. The bite may become infected.
The insect can be encountered at night as it is drawn to bright lights.
