Description

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a syndrome that may develop from a number of precurror lesions.


 

The most common lesion is a mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix which is associated with peritoneal adenomucinosis.

 

Other sources:

(1) mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix

(2) mucinous tumors of the ovary

(3) teratoma of the ovary with mucinous elements

(4) mucinous carcinoma of the colon or elsewhere in the GI tract

(5) urachal mucinous carcinoma

(6) mucinous tumors of the pancreas

(7) mucinous tumors of the gallbladder or biliary tract

(8) diverticulum of the small or large intesting

(9) perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma

(10) mucinous adenocarcinoma of the endocervix

 

The only way to exclude the appendix as the cause of PMP is to completely examine the appendix grossly and microscopically.
